Ambient backscattering - powering up a device using ambient RF energy - is one of the new research paradigms for battery-free IoT devices. But, are they in a position to be deployed everywhere? What are the the important considerations to account for before deploying an ambient backscatter system? In this work, we perform a simulation study to discuss the availability of ambient RF power in 2 urban and 2 rural areas. Based on the results, we also discuss the open questions we need to address to improve the current state-of-the art in this paradigm.
